Prof Viorel Scripcariu

Viorel Scripcariu is a 1983 graduate of the Iasi Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy, subsequently named “Grigore T Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Iasi -Romania. He is professor of Surgery since 2008 and he is head of the First Oncological Surgery Clinic of the Iasi Regional Institute of Oncology, since its establishment in 2012. He was elected Rector of the “Grigore T Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy Iasi, Romania in 2016, and in 2020 has been reelected for a second mandate. He has been National representative of the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP) between 2007 and 2013 and of the International Society of Surgery (ISS), since 2017. Since 2016 he has been elected vice-president of the Romanian Society of Surgery and in 2020, as President for a mandate which has to be started in 2024. His academic contributions have been recognized through the award of the distinction Doctor Honoris Causa by the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Nicolae Testemitanu” of the Republic of Moldavia in 2019.
Since 2016, as Rector of the “Grigore T Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, he has been constantly working, to improve the University’s external visibility and relationships with Universities from other countries, in order to strengthen existing collaborations or create new ones. In addition, he worked to improve the University’s recognition in international university rankings such as Times Higher Education World University Rankings. He promoted the University’s local growth, by sustaining the development of new infrastructure such as teaching spaces and research centers, and also the modernization of the teaching act.
The activity of the University during his leadership was acknowledged by both the Romanian Royal House and the Romanian Presidency through the distinction of the “Nihil Sine Deo” decoration and the “The Merit Order for Education in the Degree of High Officer”, respectively.As a surgeon he acts in surgical oncology with special interest in colorectal surgery.
Viorel Scripcariu was elected member of the AMSE Executive Committee in 2019.
