Health Professions: Key Ideas for Teachers and Trainers^TM (HP-KITT) Course

Rationale for the Course

At a time of change in health professions education, curriculum development and student engagement is on the agenda. This course for teachers and trainers in the health professions highlights the key developments in health professions education. Presented is a structured framework for integrating student engagement in their learning, emphasising learners as active partners rather than passive recipients. The framework embraces five key steps:

• interesting the student with an authentic curriculum
• committing the student to their learning
• facilitating their learning
• futureproofing the student
• assessment for learning

Adoption of the student engagement framework contributes to a more effective curriculum and better student learning.

Expected learning outcomes

1. The recognition of key ideas and trends taking place with regard to educational strategies in health professions education;
2. Evaluation of the applicability of the key ideas and educational strategies for use in a teaching and training programme, and how to interest, commit, facilitate, futureproof and assess students and trainees;
3. Assessment of the changing roles of the teacher and student in health professions education;
4. The ability to demonstrate scholarship in health professions education through reflecting on the key ideas presented in the course and their application in practice;
5. Increased job satisfaction with a better understanding of the responsibilities of a teacher or trainer.

Course Faculty

Ronald M Harden OBE MD FRCP(Glas) FRCS(Ed) FRCPC  (Course Director)

Professor (Emeritus) Medical Education, University of Dundee, UK; Formerly Editor-in-Chief – Medical Teacher.

Professor Ronald Harden is a leading international authority in health professions education. He has received numerous awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the President of National University of Singapore and the Karolinska Prize for Research in Medical Education. He has authored more than 400 papers and 6 texts on medical education.

Jeni Harden MA MPhil PhD PFHEA

Professor of Social Sciences in Medicine, University of Edinburgh, UK; Director of Quality, Edinburgh Medical School and Director of Education, Usher Institute.

Professor Jeni Harden has played a leading role in developing the education programme at Edinburgh Medical School and received the prestigious University of Edinburgh Chancellor’s award recognising her contributions to health professions education. She has published in the field and has co-authored the books “The Changing Role of Medical Students” and “Creating a Curriculum for Student Engagement: Key ideas for health professions education” with Ronald Harden.

Marwa Schumann MD, MME

International medical education scholar and Team Lead for Faculty Development at the Dieter Scheffner Center for Medical Education at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. She is an Associate Fellow of AMEE and a member of the WHO Advisory Committee for Lifelong Learning. She began her career as a physician at Alexandria University, where she later became an Associate Professor in Medical Education. She holds a Master of Medical Education from the University of Dundee and a Master of International Education Management from Ludwigsburg University of Education and Helwan University. She completed her doctorate at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin.

Pat Lilley BA

Formerly Managing Editor, Medical Teacher

Pat has co-authored three books with Ronald Harden: “The Definitive Guide to the OSCE”, “The Eight Roles of the Medical Teacher” and “Creating a Curriculum for Student Engagement: Key ideas for health professions education”. She has been responsible for the organisation of online and face-to-face courses for health professions educators including those delivered at APMEC, IAMSE and AMEE conferences and has contributed to the development and conceptualisation of the HP-KITT Course, for which she is Administrator.

Course structure and format

The course is presented in six modules, each lasting one week, in which a series of key ideas in health professions education is introduced. These ideas have both a theoretical and a practical foundation:

Module 1 – The curriculum framework

Module 2 – Interesting the learner

Module 3 – Committing the learner

Module 4 – Facilitating learning

Module 5 – Futureproofing the learner

Module 6 – Assessing the learner

Each module has five components:

1. A series of short video presentations giving an overview of the key issues to be addressed, illustrated with practical examples
2. Relevant sections of “Creating a Curriculum for Student Engagement: Key ideas for health professions education”, the course text provided as an e-copy included in the registration fee
3.  A list of resources to supplement the videos and the discussions
4. Activities requiring reflection on the module content and application of the issues in practice
5. A 1-hour live discussion session with the opportunity to ask questions of the course faculty.

For whom is the Course designed?

The HP-KITT course recognises that important changes are taking place in health professions education, with additional demands being placed on teachers and trainers. The course serves as an introduction to these changes both for those with new responsibilities for teaching and training in the healthcare professions, or as an update for those with more experience. It has been designed to meet the needs of teachers and trainers from all regions of the world working across the continuum of undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education.

Course fees

The Course is open to teachers in any health profession. Special rates are available for AMSE members and participants from LMICs*. We also welcome health professions students who would like to develop their education skills.
