Summary: AMSE workshop at this year’s AMEE Meeting in Glasgow

“What makes a medical school academic?” was the topic of a workshop given by the AMSE President Peter Dieter and the Executive Board members David Gordon, Zdravko Lackovic and Harm Peters at the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) Meeting 2015 in Glasgow. This workshop is part of a quality assurance initiative by AMSE.

Peter Dieter summarised how medical education has evolved in several different ways in Europe with respect to the national traditions and structures of higher education of its countries. He pointed out that there are increasing concerns on quality and outcomes of medical education related to upcoming new medical schools, especially those less firmly connected with a university faculty body. David Gordon presented an overview on the internationally well accepted standards for medical education have been set by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).

In the following discussion by the participants major theme was to define and promote quality standards recognising an institution as an academic medical school. Zdravko Lackovic introduced to ICRAM initiative, i.e. The International Campaign to Revitalise Academic Medicine. The topic of “what makes a medical school academic” was lively discussed by all participants and there was consent that this discussion has to be continued. Harm Peters, who chaired the workshop, closed the session on time and thanked all participants for their contribution to the quality assurance initiative by AMSE.
