AMSE Newsletter – 2021 – No. 5

Dear friends and colleagues, dear members of AMSE,
I would like to inform you about the elections results arrived at in the AMSE General Assembly, 8th October 2021.

AMSE General Secretary

Prof. Algirdas Utkus was elected as AMSE General Secretary. He has been AMSE EC member for about 4 years and has recently served as Interim General Secretary. He is Dean of Faculty of Medicine of Vilnius University, where he was Vice-Dean for Postgraduates studies from 2004 to 2012 and Professor of Clinical Genetics from 2012 until present. In addition, he is Head of Department of Human and Medical Genetics at the University of Vilnius.

AMSE Executive Committee members

Prof. Josanne Vassallo, Faculty of Medicine & Surgery, University of Malta, and Prof. Jiří Manďák, Charles University, Medical Faculty in Hradec Králové, Czech Republic, were elected as new AMSE EC members.

Prof. Josanne Vassallo is Professor of Medicine and Endocrinology and chairs the Medical Education Unit at the University of Malta Medical School. She is Principal Investigator at Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology Laboratory at the University Centre for Molecular Medicine and Biobanking researching pituitary adenomas and atypical non-autoimmune forms of diabetes. She has served as President of the Mediterranean Group for the Study of Diabetes, is a member of the UEMS Endocrinology subsection, subsection representative on the UEMS MJC for Rare and Undiagnosed Disorders and the Royal College of Physicians Subspecialty in Endocrinology Question Writing Group.

Prof. Jiří Manďák, MD, PhD is the Dean of Medical Faculty of Charles University in Hradec Králové, Czech Republic since 2018, after previously serving as the Vice-dean for Teaching and Student Affairs. He is a Professor of Cardiac Surgery, a consultant cardiac surgeon and a head of Academic Department of Surgery. Main areas of his professional interest: cardiac surgery and cardiac assist devices. Apart from heart surgery: teaching of cardiothoracic surgery, postgraduate and continuing professional development and medical faculty development. Main areas of interest in AMSE: to help fulfil the vision and goals of AMSE to promote medical education.

Re-elections for another term:

Prof. Nebojša Lalić, Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, Serbia;
Prof. Sergo Tabagari, David Tvildiani Medical University, Georgia; and
Prof. Viorel Scripcariu, Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy Iași, Romania.

AMSE Auditor

Prof. Athanasia Printza, MD, MSc, PhD, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in Greece was elected as AMSE Auditor. She is Associate Professor of Otorhinolaryngology-Phoniatrics, member of the School’s General Assembly, and Deputy Head of the Committee of International Affairs. As a member of the PhD, and Postgraduate Studies Committees, and research projects evaluator, she has been involved into fostering postgraduate education and quality assurance of research. She is Vice President of the Hellenic Society of Phoniatrics and Swallowing disorders (Former President). She has been engaged in continuing professional development in educational methodology (“Educating the Educators”, “Integrating technology in educational practice”) and medical education related research projects. She is engaged in extensive interdisciplinary and integrated teaching. She is a Honorary Member of the Romanian ENT society and has received awards of excellence for International Teaching from the Faculty of Health Sciences, AUTh.

Re-election for another term:

Prof. Milan Raška Palacky University Olomouc, Czech Republic.

Overall, the elections into the General Assembly certainly further strengthen AMSE and the work of the AMSE Executive Committee. We are looking forward to a fruitful collaboration.
